The Year in Books : May

Catching-up with a good book, a mug of something hot and fresh air!

Hi all, I hope you've had a great bank holiday weekend.  I'm a little late posting about this month's #theyearinbooks because we've been so busy recently.  I hope to fill you in on all things with another post soon.  Anyway, let's get down to it.  This month I have been reading The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris which is the sequel to probably her most famous novel - Chocolat.  I've had this book sitting on my bookshelf for ages, it was a Christmas present from my mum that I'd put to one side and forgotten about until now...

The book follows Vianne and Annouk as they start a new life in Montmartre, Paris and reminded me so much of my last visit to Paris where me and Steve climbed the hill to the Sacre Coeur, watched the artists at their easels and explored the cobbled streets full of tourist shops, galleries and artisan boutiques.  I haven't actually read Chocolat but have watched the film (with Johnny Depp!) many times and have read other books by Joanne Harris including Blackberry Wine, Holy Fools and Coastliners.  Her writing is a feast for the senses and beautifully descriptive.  Reading The Lollipop Shoes has had me reaching for dark chocolate, cocoa and coconut macaroons on several occasions this month!

I'm over three quarters of the way through the book and am itching to find out what happens to Zozie (a new character), who despite everything, has brought Vianne back to life.  For those of you that loved Chocolat, The Lollipop Shoes doesn't disappoint with Parisian locals becoming regulars to the chocolaterie and each character succumbing to the transformative power of Vianne's truffles, hot chocolate and her knack for knowing your favourite!

If you want to play along with #TheYearinBooks project you can find out more here.  I can't rave enough about this online book-club from Laura over at Circle of Pine Trees.  It's been so lovely to read more, go through my neglected bookshelves and share my experiences in a fun little group once a month.  It would be great to see you there!

In the meantime, happy reading! xox
